The Northern Appalachian Climate Corridor:
A Project of the Mountain Conservancy

The establishment of a Maine wildlife corridor running from the White Mountains to the northern boundary of Maine is critical for the environment to deal with two major challenges: climate warming and loss of biodiversity. Please see Map One.

This climate corridor is ecologically complex and intact. It is composed of a matrix of habitat types that are interconnected. It forms the headwaters of several rivers. And maintaining its extensive biodiversity is critical for the preservation of threatened species.

Establishing this wildlife and flora corridor provides an opportunity for plants and animals being impacted by climate change to adapt by moving to more favorable habitats that mirror their original ranges. And it enhances the opportunity for preserving biodiversity.

As climate change impacts plants and animals, they have three choices: die, adapt, or move to more favorable regions similar to their traditional habitat. Plants and animals in this corridor can move up slope on mountain sides or move further north up the corridor. This thus provides time for various species to adapt to the climate stress.

Working with members of the Maine Mountain Collaborative, efforts are under way to preserve this corridor.
